buddha night

i chant japanese
paying no attention
to crippled knees.
i breathe
then i start
over and
breathe again.
i taste the incense
but tell myself
i don’t.
i talk
to no one
without a
painless face.
i’m divided
from the floor
by my pillow
of seeds and thread.
a flickering candle
interrupts my
breathing
i start over
and breathe
again
chant japanese
drink tea
and go home.
