brother john dostal

the salt river mustang
has no race horse blood.
he’s nobody’s pony.
chasing away the wind
he gallops and trots.
running like desert fire.
he has a thousand names
i have never given him one.
he breeds his favorite
mares and fillies alike.
it is a cowboy’s dream
to be free like him.
i am the tortured path
he walks on in the sun.
rain dripping from his mane.
no one notices fear
for he’s never known none.
someday age will take him
to be wise and tired.
i hope to be ashes
a long time dead by then.
i’ll return to the desert
a salt river mustang.
brother to a cowboy.
